He mentioned that the upcoming incentives will be designed to be competitive with offerings from other regional competitors like Thailand and Vietnam. As the largest economy in Southeast Asia, Indonesia is striving to entice electric vehicle manufacturers to invest in the country. One of the primary attractions for these companies is Indonesia’s abundant reserves of nickel, a crucial raw material for electric vehicle batteries.
Despite Indonesia’s efforts, some automakers, including BYD, have opted to invest in Thailand, which serves as the automotive hub of Southeast Asia. In response to this, Luhut expressed, “We are in the final stages of designing the incentives for electric vehicle investment in Indonesia. The proposed measures are currently awaiting approval from Indonesian President Joko Widodo.”
China has also been implementing a series of preferential policies to boost its electric vehicle industry, including subsidies of up to US$500 billion for each domestically produced electric vehicle and a reduction of value-added tax on pure electric vehicles from 11% ke 1%.
